3.5ed Faction Affiliations

I posted this over on Enworld but didn't get a lot of response. I figure it might be more appreciated here...

Well, it's a little late now that 4e is here and a lot of Planescape DMs may have moved on from 3e. But I used affiliation rules from the PHB 2 to create pre Faction Wars stats for Factions if anyone is interested.

I'm not a big rules content creator but I tried to stick to the
construction method in the PHB 2 for building custom affiliations. I
also referenced the 2e Factol's Manifesto to get the right flavor per
faction and keep the faction benefits as close as I could to 2e.

It may seem overpowered but I did my best to stick to what the PHB 2
says. I'm not very good at gauging this kind of stuff but I think I did
ok. Please check it out and feel free to give any suggestions. I'm not
a writer either so my grammar/spelling may be pretty bad.

I used excel and it's not very pretty. But if anyone wants to spice it
up to make it look more like a PS book, I can give you the excel file.



BTW, there is also an affiliation I created for the Planewalker Guild.

I was going to do the same thing soon, after it was suggested to me to use the affiliation rules in another thread.

Your work is definitely a great help. Maybe I'll alter some things like giving namers some abilities as well for the game I'll (hopefully) be running soon. Smiling

Thats great stuff, I intend to playtest it with my group. Is there any chance of you having done up the Sodkilers, Sons of Mercy, or Doorsnops Guild, is there?

Well I run a pre-faction

Well I run a pre-faction war campaign so I focused on the main factions in Sigil. I used the Factol's Manifesto as a guide to help figure out what kind of benefits the affiliations should have. It was very helpful. I'd assume it would a lot harder to create affiliations for other factions since there isn't as much information about them in published books. I just can't dedicate the time & effort for that project Tongue out

 Let me know what your group thinks of the affiliations. I wrote them by myself & I'm not much a rules guy, so any feedback is appreciated.

I may end up changing a few

I may end up changing a few things here and there, but I'll document and share what and why f I do. I'll also happily provide the periodic playtest report....

 Had to ask. I'll probably take a shot at putting one togetehr for the Sons of Mercy because then I'll have everything I need for my PCs. I'm going to debut this in Thursdays game. Thanks for all the hard work you put in!

In the chart for Affiliation points earned for the Transcendent Order it reads


+1 per group        Every 1 rank in Balance, Climb, Escape Artist, Jump, Spot, & Tumble skills as a group 

Now I know this is not a point for point thing, but I cannot quite noodle my head around it. After going through it all I really like what I see a lot, I'll let you kow how it all holds up in playtest.

 A lot of this stuff I had a hard time trying to put into words and be a short enough sentence to stay on 1 line.  This was one of them. This is also a questionable criteria that I wasn't confident with. My player is a Cipher and also called me out on it complaining that it was unfair...but my players complained about anything that could be seen as a negative & didn't complain about anything that might have been overpowered. So it was hard getting honest feedback from them.

What I meant was that the Cipher gains a +1 if he put at least 1 skill point in all of those skills. He takes a -1 if he does not have at least 1 point in all of those skills. My thinking was that a Cipher needs to train himself in all kinds of physical & mental skills at least a little in order to fully act without thought.

 The player kept complaining that it would cripple his PC by spreading skill points around like that. I explained that it is not something a player has to do if he is more worried about character optimization over roleplaying. The affiliation rules are a choice & meant to provide a benefit for roleplaying their faction belief, and if you think something is crippling, then just avoid that choice. I told him that Ciphers who train in those skills may be more dedicated to achieving higher status in the faction than a Cipher that doesn't, that's all.  If he doesn't put skill points in those skills, it is not going to nerf his character class, so the only thing to worry about is the fact it may take longer to raise in affiliation rank.  

 I understand the fact that I even had to explain my reasoning for that rule may be an indicator that it's a bad rule. So if you have any alternatives for improving it or rewording it, I'm all ears Smiling

Okay, that makes a lot more

Okay, that makes a lot more sense to me now. Lets see now.  


+1    1 rank each in Balance, Climb, Escape Artist, Jump, Spot, & Tumble skills

 There, +1 if the PC has one point in each of these skills. -1 if not. That fixes the sentence, I'll be going over it in depth (Have an Elan Ardent Cipher in the game) hopefully tomorrow. More input soon.
