2nd ed question about Bladesingers

Well so this isn't a Planescape topic but hope some one will chime in on it, I am starting a campaign where I am letting in classes and races that my friends have been wanting to play but our normal Dm won't allow. One such request is a bladesinger out of the Elves handbook. The question is this Are they allowed to cast spells in leather and studded leather armor? It says they lose the ability of the bladesong if they wear anything heavier than studded leather, But it has always been that you can't cast spells in armor (except wizard robes). What I see the bladesong being is this: Plusses to AC and Attack/damage and ability to cast one handed. This doesn't change rules of magic in which the magic flows through the caster. Any Ideas? I know I'm the DM but I don't want to pull that card out .
