Lost is a Cant word meaning dead. Not dead as in the+Dead, but just ordinary dead. "He got lost" means that barring magic, he's not going to find his way back.
That's 'cause it's hard to find specific Petitioners in the infinite Outer Planes, especially since they've got no memories.
