Angelic creatures called aphanacts dwelled in the Plane of Mechanus until 10,000 years ago. They were ambitious and obsessed with justice, conquering vast regions of the Multiverse in the name of Law. An alliance of fiends and celestials, or possibly of gods, seems to have annihilated them. The inevitables appeared in Mechanus for the first time shortly thereafter.
