Malliflower

The inhabitants of Bytopia all know of the rare malliflower, and seek it out. Growing low to the ground, it bears large silvery petals set around a golden face which contains many small oval seeds. The flower is found on Shurrock, growing above large deposits of valuable ore, and anyone who finds one is almost guaranteed a fortune should he dig at that spot. As a rule, anyone who finds one takes careful note of the location and then destroys the flower to prevent anyone else from knowing the ore's existence.

Svirfneblin rarely come to the surface in any case and disdain the use of the flower, but will occasionally emerge to find and uproot any malliflowers that they find growing above newly-discovered ore veins. On the gentler layer of Dothion, the flower grows in almost any location and is much more common. It loses its metallic coloration on this layer, its petals becoming white and its face yellow.

When this flower reproduces, it releases its seeds, which fall upwards, attracted only by the gravity of the other layer. Winds disperse the seeds widely before they land. On Shurrock, the seeds must land on a patch of earth above a vein to germinate, but on Dothion any location will do. Once the seeds have all released, the petals detach and also "fall" to the other layer. Residents of the Twin Paradises often paint messages on the petals just before they release, this plane's equivalent of a "message in a bottle".
