Hm. Must be a house rule we have then - that Gentle Repose prevents raising as undead until a proper raise spell can be used to bring them back to the living. I'll check my books sometime.

Gentle Repose
Necromancy
Level: Clr 2, Sor/Wiz 3
Components: V, S, M/DF
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Touch
Target: Corpse touched
Duration: One day/level
Saving Throw: Will negates (object)

You preserve the remains of a dead creature so that they do not decay. Doing so effectively extends the time limit on raising that creature from the dead (see raise dead). Days spent under the influence of this spell don’t count against the time limit. Additionally, this spell makes transporting a fallen comrade more pleasant.
The spell also works on severed body parts and the like.
Arcane Material Component: A pinch of salt, and a copper piece for each eye the corpse has (or had).
Ok yep. Tis one of our house rules then.
I imagine pretty much every hedge wizard and village witch would have a spell like handy in a world where corpses are battle-fodder. Simple but pragmatic.
You're Back! Yay! We were all wondering where you'd disappeared to.
4th level seems a little bit high for this spell. Honestly, I think I'd call it 1st. I do like it, though.
There is the Burial Blessing spell in Defenders of Faith that is 1st level, does about the same thing but costs 100XP(making it useless IMHO and my players opinion). I thought that -100XP for 4th level and domain only would be a fair trade. It also makes more sense to me-we call the clerics of the Death god to make sure our dear rest in peace.
Nope. Gentle repose preserves a body so that it can be raised from the dead later.
