Keeping a soul from its rightful place in the afterlife is the most heinous of crimes in Kelemvor's and Jergal's* eyes. Casting this spell allows the caster to detect a soul of a dead creature which hasn't been able to go to their final resting place. To cast the spell, you must have some knowledge of the creature. I.e. you must have seen it, know its name, know legends about it or own something once owned by it.

The spell then finds the location of the creature's soul regardless of the means of the soul's imprisonment. This spell works even if the target creature has been turned into an undead, captured by a devourer, trapped in a soul gem, or soul binding. It can be used to locate a lich's phylactery. Nothing short of the direct intervention of a deity keeps you from learning the soul's location.

Detect Soul ignores all means of protection from scrying or location. The spell reveals the name of the location (place, name, building name or the like), community, county, country, continent and plane where the soul lies. If the soul is trapped in an item or creature, it gives you a good idea of the object's-creature's liking.

If the soul has already moved on to its appropriate location, such as the realm of their diety, petitioner form, or merged with their home place, then the spell returns no location. The spell fails if the soul has been completely destroyed.
