Dragon Scale Armor

Anonymous's picture

When dragons are killed their scales can be harvested by adventurers for use in the making of powerful armor. Not all Dragonscale armor is made from dead dragons, however. If a dragon feels that a group of adventurers has earned it, the dragon can choose to give them its scales. These scales can form a much more powerful suit of armor.

Certain weapons and magic can disrupt the scales power. If any magic is used, it renders the scales useless for Armor. Also there is a cumulative 1% chance with slashing weapons and a 3% chance with piercing weapons that the dragonscales will be useless.

If a Dragon gives its scales willingly the armor will have the following stats:

  • AC 4 points lower than that of the dragon (example: if the dragon had an AC of 20 the armor gives an AC of 16)
  • Immune to breath weapon(s) of that dragon type
  • Immune to other effects of a similar manner (example: white dragon scale not only renders the wearer immune to white dragon breath but also to other cold attacks, such as cone of cold)
  • Lightweight, less than 15 lbs
  • Able to cast spells while wearing

If the scales are taken from the Dragon they have the following stats:

  • AC 10 points lower than that of the dragon (example: if the dragon had an AC of 20 the armor gives an AC of 10)
  • Wearer suffers only 1/2 damage from the breath weapon(s) of that dragon type only if a corresponding spell of that type is cast on the armor(Red dragon breath-Fireball, etc.), Reflex save to take no damage
  • Relatively lightweight, less than 30 lbs
  • 35% chance of spell failure

Dragons can only give scales once a year, but they can give inferior scales once every three months. Why: I felt like this was more realistic than the method in the Monster Manual.Pro: It makes the game much more realistic and causes the players to think about their methods for defeating the dragon.Con: If the players have long been working towards the goal of a suit or two of dragonscale armor, there is a chance that their efforts will have been wasted.
