Plane-touched, Tiefling

Personality: Of all the plane-touched, none precipitate as much fascination – or as much fear – as tieflings. Obviously human and "something else" crossbreeds, the "something else" in the tieflings' case is usually assumed to be lower–planar. An infernal stigma follows all tieflings through their lives. Loners by nature, they make their own paths out of necessity. Tieflings take care of themselves, for they learn that no one else will take care of them. But rather than withdraw from society, tieflings challenge the multiverse with everything in their independent spirits. Determined to create their own fates, they dare things that others might not even dream of and defy anything that stands in their way.By: James O'RanceImported from a previous version of Planewalker.com
Physical Description: No two tieflings look the same. Beyond an aura that many find disturbing, many tieflings are indistinguishable from humans. Others have small horns, pointed teeth, red eyes, a whiff of brimstone about them, or even cloven feet. More outlandish and frightening appearances are possible.
Relations: Tieflings are distrusted and feared by humans, aasimar, bariaurs, elves, and most Prime Material races. They respond with bitterness and self–reliance. The githzerai have no particular feeling towards tieflings, which are rare in their society, and can be more accepting of them than other races – which isn't saying much.
Alignment: Lawful Good
Lands: Tieflings call no lands their own, although they are most commonly found in the burgs of the Lower Planes, or in the cosmopolitan centres of planar society such as the Outlands' gatetowns or the Cage.
Religion: Tieflings more often than not follow their inherent traits and heed the call to evil. Few tieflings belong to any faith that is either lawful or good, but exceptional individuals might unexpectedly follow a more stringent moral code.
Language: Tieflings do not have their own tongue, but speak the language of the communities in which they were raised, as well as Planespeak. Many tieflings have dealings with fiends of some sort, and learn languages of the Lower Planes such as Abyssal and Infernal.
Names: Tieflings take names common to the community in which they were born, although many also possess a more fearful title bestowed upon them by the childhood gangs that they ran with in youth. Those who respect the tiefling's skill, knowledge, or cunning will refer to her by this title; those who laugh at the thought of the character will laugh mockingly when it is spoken.
Male Names: None
Female Names: None
Family Names: None
Adventurers: In most societies, tieflings maintain a low profile, and take up adventuring careers as thieves, assassins, spies, and agents–for–hire. In cities of a lower–planar nature a tiefling character might rise to a position of power, but in other places when his nature is revealed he quickly becomes an outcast. Such a character might be forced to undertake perilous ventures to make a place for himself.
Racial Traits:
  • Tieflings are Level + 1 characters.
  • +2 Dexterity, +2 Intelligence, –2 Charisma.
  • Medium–size: As Medium-size creatures, tieflings have no special bonuses or penalties due to their size.
  • Tiefling base speed is 30 feet.
  • Outsider: All tieflings possess Darkvision to 60 feet. They cannot be brought back from the dead by raise dead or resurrection spells, unless these are cast on their home plane (typically a Lower Plane). In many other respects, they are treated as Humanoids.
  • +2 racial bonus to Bluff checks: Tieflings can be alluring and strangely persuasive.
  • +2 bonus to Hide checks: Tieflings survive by concealing themselves from searching eyes.
  • Cold, electricity, and fire resistance 5: Tieflings have an otherwordly resistance inherited from their fiendish bloodline.
  • Spell–Like Power: Tieflings can cast darkness as a sorcerer of their level, once per day.
  • Automatic Languages: Planespeak. Bonus Languages: Baatezu, Bladeling, Infernal, Khaasta, Night Hag, Tso, Yugoloth. Tieflings commonly know the languages of their ancestors or those dangerous races that they mix with in lower-planar burgs.
  • Favoured Class: Rogue. A multiclass tiefling’s rogue class does not count when determining whether she suffers an XP penalty (see Experience for Multiclass Characters, page 56 of the Player’s Handbook.

Re: Plane-touched, Tiefling

The only thing I don't like about 3rd ed. Tieflings is how they were made so generic. I think the table from the 2nd ed. that listed physical descriptions, attributes, abilities should be listed as well instead of the generic all tieflings get + 5 res to cold etc.... it was a random 100 table and you got to roll like 5 times or something like that from a Planescape box set or either from the Sigil box set. I can't remember its been so long ago. Or your DM could allow you to pick what traits you wanted off of that list instead of random 100 roll. I have the table hand written down somewhere in an old notebook from like 15 years ago. I will have to find it.

Was the lawful good alignment a mistake? Not only does that particular alignment seem unlikely for people who commonly become rogues but it also directly contradicts the section on religion further down.
