Paedions are strange entities found throughout Carceri. They're most common in Othrys and the farther down a basher goes, the less often they are encountered. They have even been spotted - though seldomly - in Agathys. A paedion (also known as Chain Children) appears as a human or demihuman (or tiefling, or aasimar) child, wrapped in heavy chains. This gives them a superficial resemblance to kytons, but graybeards agree there's no real relation there, and there are important differences, too. For one thing, the kytons have great control over their chains, and use them almost as an extension of their bodies. The paedions, on the other hand, would like nothing better than to be free of their chains. Problem is, the only way they can buy even fleeting freedom is to put their chains on some other sod. Combat

Chains (Su): While a paedion can attack with its fists if it absolutely has to, it prefers to throw its chains at attackers. If the chain misses, it immediately snakes back to the chain child and wraps itself back around its body. However, if it hits, it wraps around the victim instead. The range increment for the paedion's chain attack is 10 ft.Any basher who gets wrapped up by a chain has a -2 circumstance penalty to his Dexterity, which impacts on many things including AC, Reflex Saves, and Initiative just for starters. Also, his movement rate is decreased by 5 ft.The really bad news though, is that the paedion's likely to try to throw more chains on the sod, and all the penalties are cumulative.Devoiding itself of the chains, has a rather desirable effect upon a Chain Child. You see, for every chain they lose, their Dexterity is increased by 1 and for every two chains it gets rid of, its movement rate is increased by 5 ft.Of course, a basher can escape from a paedion's chains, but it ain't easy. Pulling off one chain requires a successful Escape Artist check at a DC of 13 (to get a grip on the chains) followed by an opposed grapple check. (For the grapple check, the chain should be considered to have an attack bonus of +5. Each of these requires a full-round action, so even if both checks succeed a cutter'll need at least two rounds to pull off a chain.'Course, keeping in mind that the chain children'll probably be throwing more chains in the meanwhile, the best bet might be to take the paedions out first and worry about the chains afterward. Someone whose Dexterity has been brought to 0 by the chains, however, is unable to do anything to free himself, and must be freed by someone else (with an opposed grapple check as described above). Any chain a victim manages to throw off returns to the paedion and wraps itself back around it, as long as the paedion is within 40 ft, otherwise they just become inert chains - until some leatherhead picks one up - which starts the cycle all over again.A given paedion has a total of six chains wrapping around its body. When it's got rid of all six chains (by wrapping them around someone else), it's free - for a while, anyway. The chains'll reform around its body in a day, no matter what it does. In the meantime, though, the unchained paedion will immediately leave the combat, if possible. It's not interested in fighting; it just wants to enjoy its brief period of wonderful freedom... before the chains weigh it down again. Create Spawn (Su): A sod that is put in the dead-book while wrapped in paedion chains (regardless of the direct cause of death) will reform as a paedion himself within a day of his demise.Resistances (Ex): Paedions have cold, poison, and acid resistance 12.Habitat/SocietyPaedions don't have much of a society, or at least if they do no one's tumbled to it yet. They seem to just roam the orbs of Carceri, seeking victims to transfer their chains to. Different paedions take different approaches to how they'll accomplish this. Some take the direct approach, running up and throwing their chains at any sods they meet. Others set ambushes, trying to take victims by surprise and get them all chained up before they know what hit them. Still others prey on the Clueless, and take advantage of their resemblance to innocent children to play on their victims' sympathies. Still, whatever their exact methods, a paedion is definitely bad news. Paedions speak planar common, Abyssal, and perhaps some other languages of creatures common to Carceri as well.0EcologyGraybeards disagree as to where the paedions came from. Obviously now they can perpetuate their kind, but there still has to have been one to start out with. (Besides, that may not the only way for new chain children to be formed). Maybe the best theory anyone's come up with so far is that the first paedion was some berk who got put under a curse by a power - but that's still a long way from being proven, and even if it's true no one knows who the berk was, or which power did the cursing, or why...
