In the North, land is at a premium. Among hostile neighbors of various humans, undead, fey and trolls, and landscape features, mountains, fjords and rocky slopes, good land is hard to come by. Therefore a number of people have been tempted to move the boundary stones (deild) between their farm and the neighboring farm a little, giving them more land. The name deildegast means deild-ghost.

Sometimes this nags their conscience so much that when they die they are bound to this plane and try vainly to atone for this deed by replacing the deild. Other times they are cursed by others to this existance.

However, they are prevented from atoning the crime by a number of factors. One, death often blurs the mind, and they cannot remember where the deild they moved are. When they finally find the right ones they are incapable of lifting them. Often a special curse is laid upon a deild at its laying. Here is an example of a typical curse:

"He who lifts this deild so high that the sun shines underneath it shall forever be doomed to wander the night,"

In appearance they are spectral apparitions that look like they did at the time of death, often an old, stooped man with plain farming clothes on, bearing a torch or a lantern, wandering the farms trying to find the deilds. If he has by any chance found the stones, he spends his time trying to lift and carry them, a futile labor, considering the incorporeal nature of the deildegast. In the latter case, the deild glows with an unearthly light. The lantern/torch/deild looks much the same as a will-o-wisp, giving off an eerie spectral glow

CombatDeildegast are non-violent, pathetic characters searching for release from their undeath. If attacked, the deildegast will attack with chilling hands.Ability Damage (Ex): Characters struck by the hands must make a Fortitude save (DC15) or lose 1 point of Strength and Constitution. Characters reduced to 0 STR or CON die, and cannot be ressurected without the help of a Wish or Miracle. Lost points return at the rate of 1 per day (player's choice of whether Str or Con). Undead (Ex): Being undead, deildegasts are immune to posoin, sleep, paralysis, stunning, diesease, death effects and necromantic effects. They also ignore min-influencing effects. Neither are they subject to critical hits, subdual damage, ability damage, ability drain, or energy drain.Incorporeal (Ex): Having no physical body, deildegasts are harmed only by +1 or better magical weapons, spells, spell-like abilities, or supernatural abilities. They are completely immmune to all nonmagical forms of attack. Even if attacked with a magical weapon, the deildgast has a 50% chance of ignoring the damage if dealt by a corporeal source. Being incorporeal allows the deildegast to move silently perfectly - in fact they can only be noticed with a listen check if they want to be. They are also capable of passsing through solid objects at will.Rejuvenation (Ex): If destroyed in combat, the deildegast dissipates, but returns 3 nights later. The only way to permanently put one to rest is to find the displaced deild and carry it back to the proper placeHabitat/SocietyThe deildegast are unpleasant to look at, but not harmful like most undead. Folks living in an area with a deildegast are often afraid to visit the haunted site at night, despite the fact that the deildegast is pretty harmelss. There is only one deildegast at any one farm site.0EcologyDeildegasts have no appreciable influence on the ecology, except that most animals stay well away from it.
